Music never evokes the same emotions in different people. For some, it is a soulful experience, a sweet escape, a solace, merely a distraction or a source of joy in the mundane life. Well, the emotions instilled mainly depend upon the genre you’re listening to. As a matter of fact, there are different kinds of music that accompany different situations, feelings, and moods.

Genres in music are majorly categorized on the basis of common traditions, style of music or fundamental values. They are defined by the musical techniques, the styles, the context, content, and spirit of the themes. Indian Classical, Trance and Opera are among the most popular music genres across the globe.

Indian Classical

A genre of South Asian music, Indian Classical is believed to be one of the oldest forms of art music in the Indian Subcontinent. It mainly has two sub-genres: Hindustani (the North Indian style) and the Carnatic music (the south Indian style). All the Hindi ghazals, movie songs, bhangra, jugalbandi, qawwali, and bhajan-kirtans are included in this music genre. Mohammed Rafi, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Tansen, Zakhir Hussain, Bismillah Khan are of the legendaries who composed masterpieces in Indian classical music. They have played a major role in popularizing this genre.


Originated in Germany, during the 1990s, Trance is a genre of electronic music. It is based on repetitive melodic phrases, with the tempo ranging from 110–150 bpm (BPM). With the beats remaining static, the genre is melodic and progressive at the same time. Creating a soothing frequency, this music indulges the listeners perfectly. Armin Van Burren, Andrew Bayer, Ferry Tayle, Tiesto, Skazi are some of the well-known artists in this genre.


Also known as the art of emotions, Opera is a melodious amalgamation of music, singing, drama, poetry and plastic arts. It is a unique musical genre in which the singers perform in a dramatic way. Opera is a major part of the Western classical music tradition. Maria Callas, Anna Netrebko, Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Nicolai Gedda are some of the best opera singers of all time.
